A penetrating, wise gaze
This giant white snowy owl has been looking at us from the corner of Frankrijklei and Maria- Theresialei in Antwerp since last week. It is the work of Antwerp photographer Vincent Lagrange in honour of his latest book Between Us. With the artwork, Lagrange invites the viewer to feel small in the animal world.
Vincent Lagrange: ‘’I create a world in which animals are at the centre and invite you into a world where we feel small and they have all the power.’ Each portrait turns the world around and shows animals as guardians of a world much older and deeper than we often acknowledge. The owl embodies this vision. A silent, wise observer, it carries a wisdom that is timeless, calm and powerful – so different from the restless energy of human life and the crowded place where this image is currently on display. With these portraits, I want to remind the city of the quiet wisdom of nature and our role in it, as guests in a world we share but do not own.’
