Urban Art Biennale 2013

The world’s metropolises are the sources of inspiration for the artists of Urban Art. New York, Los Angeles, Paris, Berlin, London, and the World Cultural Heritage Site at the Völklingen Ironworks have become the sites of encounter with an art that, thanks to digital cameras and the internet, has made a triumphal procession from the streets and stepped up into the museums. The beginning of Urban Art lay in graffiti. From youths in the New York Bronx spraying subway cars and house facades, the style of graffiti became a global expression of youth culture.

Urban Art is a cultural phenomenon that spans the entire globe: art museums and galleries incorporate the works of the post-graffiti generation into their collections. Works on canvas by Urban Artists occasionally command the highest prices at auctions. The city and its streets remain the inspiration for Urban Art’s protagonists though nowadays they may not work with the spray can but instead take on the legacy of the graffiti generation with brush and canvas. The World Cultural Heritage Site at the Völklingen Ironworks has offered Urban Art a regular forum – the Urban Art Biennial.
